Relatives of accident victims yet to receive compensation

Two months into the accident, families of victims of Birta Deurali, Kavre bus mishap are still waiting for compensation.

They had reached the District Administration Office, Kavre yesterday to submit a memorandum demanding compensation. As many as 27 persons had died when a commuter bus belonging to Araniko Transport Service Committee met with an accident at Khaharekhola in Birta Deurali on August 15.

Following the accident, representatives of local political parties and concerned transport committee as well as security agencies of the district had reached an agreement that the families of the deceased would get six lakh rupees each in compensation.

But as the families of the victims have yet to receive the pledged compensation amount, they warned of staging an agitation if the money was not provided soon. “The families of the victims have warned of agitation if distribution of compensation is delayed further,” said Acting Chief District Officer of Kavre, Bhimkanta Poudel.

The victims’ families struggle committee has decided to disrupt movement of all the buses of the committee from Sunday. Similarly, all vehicles bound eastward from Dolalghat along the Araniko Highway will be disrupted on Monday while the next day, the committee’s buses will be not be allowed to ply in the entire district.

Likewise, families of the victims have also warned of padlocking the committee’s central office and stage an indefinite sit-in from Wednesday.
