Tilathi flood victims demand relief

Rajbiraj, September 25

Flood victims of Tilathi VDC in Saptari today submitted a memo to the Chief District Officer of Saptari Baldev Gautam, demanding relief and fair investigation into irregularities in relief distribution.

The agitating victims also announced their protest programmes to put pressure on the authority. Former lawmaker and coordinator of the Struggle Committee Shiva Chandra Mishra said they had no option but to hit the street as the concerned authority didn’t bother to initiate investigation and action against those involved in irregularity during relief distribution to flood victims.

As per their protest programme, the victims will demonstrate with a silent rally at the VDC office tomorrow, hold a corner meet at Tilathi Customs Office on Tuesday, hold another corner meet with black bands on their arms on Wednesday, stage a sit-in at the VDC office on Thursday and organise a press meet and announce other fresh protest programmes on Saturday.

Earlier, Tilathi folks had warned of agitation when a delegation met with CDO Gautam on September 14 regarding the same issue.

The victims complained that as many as 579 of the total 667 flood victim households were deprived of relief. The families were displaced after floods in Khandokhola destroyed their houses in August.

Though the record shows that all the victim families were provided the relief amount of Rs 3,000 each, only 88 families of Ward No 2 have actually received the amount.
