Gachhadar asks top three leaders to come up with solid proposal for talks, says will accept Constitution if amended

UPDATE: Chairman of Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum-Democratic said that he has asked the top leaders of three major parties to come up with a solid proposal for talks in order to resolve the crisis amid violent protests in the Tarai region over the new Constitution.

After holding a meeting with Nepali Congress President and Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Tuesday afternoon, Gachhadar said that the three parties in Federal Democratic Front (FDF), which he leads, would sit for the talks if the major parties came up with a solid proposal and were ready for the amendment of Constitution.

Organising a press conference, Gachhadar said that the FDF constituents would accept the Constitution, which was promulgated on September 20, if the new charter was amended by addressing the concerns of the Madhesi parties.

Gachhdar maintained that the current situation of unrest aroused because the major parties did not pay heed to the concerns raised by the Madhesis, Tharus and Janajati and bulldozed their way through the promulgation of Constitution.

He pointed out the purported federal model with seven provinces as the bone of contention and stated that it should be corrected immediately.

According to Gachhadar, the top three leaders have told him they would hold talks soon and find a way out before Prime Minister Koirala leaves for New York to take part in the United Nations General Assembly.

Top three leaders meet MJF-D Chairman Gachhadar

KATHMANDU: Top leaders of three major parties including Prime Minister Sushil Koirala held a meeting with Chairman of Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum-Democratic, Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar this afternoon.

The major parties, Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and UCPN-Maoist, are trying to convince the Madhesi parties that have been launching agitation expressing their reservation over the new Constitution to come to the table for talks.

After a joint meeting, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal left the MJF-D's office, while Nepali Congress President and Prime Minister sat for a bilateral.

MJF-D Chairman Raj Kishor Yadav, Rastriya Madhesh Samajwadi Party Chairman Sarat Singh Bhandari and MJF-D Vice-Chairman Jitendra Dev also took part in the meeting.

Emerging from the meeting, Oli and Dahal hinted that the discussion with Gachhadar was positive.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Koirala had met Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party's Chairman Mahantha Thakur and asked the United Democratic Madhesi Front to come to the table for talks.
