UCPN-M slams JC decision

KATHMANDU, August 8

Charging that the appointment of district judges was against the Interim Constitution, the main opposition party Unified CPN-Maoist on Saturday demanded that the Judicial Council revoke its decision.

Organising a press conference here on Saturday, Chief of Law Department of the party Prabhu Sah said the decision was against the spirit of the Interim Constitution and it was unconstitutional to appoint judges when the CA had proposed reappointment in the judiciary in the new constitution.

Sah, who is also a former Law and Justice minister, said the appointment of only one woman and one Madhesi judge out of 60 appointments flouted the principle of inclusiveness of the Interim Constitution. He added that none of the 60 judges belonged to the Dalit community.

He said appointment of incompetent judges would adversely affect the delivery of justice and hurt the dignity of the judiciary as well as public trust.
