Kathmandu, August 17

United Democratic Madhesi Front today decided to continue its general strike in the Tarai against the draft constitution indefinitely.

UDMF issued a press release saying the ongoing general strike would continue until identity-based federalism, proportional inclusion and rights guaranteed under the Interim Constitution were ensured in the new constitution. Chair of Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal Chair Upendra Yadav told THT that the rights issues had became ‘a do or die’ question. The front said a few leaders of the four parties had pushed the country towards regression by violating agreements signed with marginalised communities including the 22-point agreement and 8-point agreement signed with Madhesi forces.

The UDMF said the first draft of the constitution was against the principles of proportional inclusion, inclusive democracy, self-rule and autonomy, identity-based federalism and democratic republican system.

“This draft has negated the rights of Madhesis, indigenous nationalities, Tharus, Dalits, OBCs, women, Muslims, marginalised Khas and minorities,” the press release said.
