UDMF enforces Birgunj shutdown

Birgunj, March 26

United Democratic Madhesi Front Parsa today enforced a general shutdown in Birgunj demanding release of its three arrested cadres.

Parsa police had arrested as many as 17 UDMF cadres, including National Madhes Socialist Party central member Rajeshman Singh, when they tried to prevent Unified CPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal from inaugurating the Second Birgunj Festival and Trade Fair in Birgunj yesterday. UDMF resorted to shutting down Birgunj after the police did not freeĀ  three of its cadres.

Form early morning, UDMF cadres had descended on the streets. They took out a protest rally and burned tyres at various places. Vehicles stayed off the roads due to the shutdown. No untoward incident was reported as a large number of police personnel were deployed in the city.

UDMF cadres had waved black flags at Dahal accusing him of bringing an anti-Madhesi constitution.

DSP Hobindra Bogati said the three arrested UDMF cadres were freed today.
