US urges Nepali stakeholders to engage in nonviolent means

KATHMANDU: Responding to the latest violent protests in Nepal, the United States has urged all the Nepali stakeholders to engage in the democratic process through peaceful, nonviolent means.

Speaking at a regular press briefing in Washington DC on Monday, Elizabeth Trudeau the Director of Press Office, said, "We are aware of the reports (of violence). We’re closely following the situation in Nepal. We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. We encourage all Nepalese to continue to engage in the democratic process through peaceful, nonviolent means."

She further called on the Nepali security forces to exercise appropriate restraint as people exercise their democratic rights. "And we encourage – we continue to urge Nepal’s leaders to reach an accommodation that builds the broadest possible support for the constitution."

When asked if she agreed with the claim that the recently promulgated Constitution that Nepal "was not intrusive enough", she said "Okay, well, for internal Nepali politics, I’m going to refer you to the Government of Nepal."

An Indian national was killed in a police firing during a violent protest in Birgunj of Nepal yesterday.

Following violent demonstrations, local administration has imposed an indefinite curfew in Birgunj since 3 pm yesterday.
