Water crisis hits Udayapur hard

Gaighat, April 26

Locals of Triyuga Municipality in Udayapur have been reeling under acute shortage of drinking water after local water resources went dry due to the long drought.

Deban Chaudhary, a local, said tube wells, ponds and wells, among other underground water sources, had gone dry a week ago at the municipality.

Earlier, the villagers could get underground water after digging up to 10 feet, but these days they cannot find water even after digging up to 30 feet, he said.

Meanwhile, engineer Ramesh Dhungana, of District Technical Office, Udayapur, said the locals were suffering from acute shortage of water after the underground water sources went dry due to the long drought.

“There has been no rainfall for months now and the water layer has depleted following the same,” he said.

Residents of Sonapur Musahari Tole of the municipality are compelled to go to nearby villages to fetch water.

As many as 80 households of Sonapur have already migrated due to the water crunch.
