Nepal's Mira Rai finishes second in 110-km Ultra Pirineu race in Spain

KATHMANDU: Nepali ultra runner Mira Rai secured second position at the Salomon Ultra Pirineu 2015 in Spain.

Rai, a former Maoist combatant turned athlete, completed the 110-km high-altitude mountain race in 13 hours, 43 minutes and 49 seconds on Saturday.

She ran at an average speed of 9.65 km per hour to finish the arduous race.

Rai finished behind Emelie Forsberg who completed the distance in 13 hours 39 minutes and 33 seconds.

Spain's Kilian Jornet, who completed the distance in 12 hours and three minutes, won the Ultra Pirineu 2015 in men's category.

The 110-km endurance event's course included 6,800 metre of positive elevation gain.

The race was the last event of the Ultra category of 2015 Skyrunner World Series, in which 1000 runners had taken part.

With its start and finish in Bagà of Barcelona, the course passed through the Cadí Moixeró Natural Park.

With Saturday's results, Rai, who secured first position in the Mont Blanc Ultra 80km in June and second position in the Tromsø Ultra 45km, rounded up her first Skyrunning season with flying colours.
