Tomljanovic advances

TOKYO: Croatia's Ajla Tomljanovic beat American Madison Brengle to reach the Japan Women's Open semi-finals on Friday, leaving the tournament bereft of its top four seeds.

Rising star Tomljanovic continued her fine run at the rain-hit Tokyo event with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the third seed, having already eliminated Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm.

Tomljanovic will play Yanina Wickmayer in the last four after the Belgian came from a set down to beat Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Poland's Magda Linette followed her upset over Zarina Diyas on Thursday by overpowering Taiwanese rival Hsieh Su-Wei 6-3, 6-3.
