Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup event set for next week at Gokarna

Kathmandu, May 4

Turkish Airlines Inc today announced the Nepal leg of the Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup.

A total of 100 golfers from Gokarna, Royal Nepal Golf Club, Dharan and Pokhara will take part in the tournament at the Gokarna Golf Club on May 12 and the winner of the event will earn berth in the finals of the sixth Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup slated for November in Antalya, informed Senior Golf Director of Gokarna Forest Resort Deepak Acharya.

Around 8,000 players will take part in tournaments in 63 countries and the winners of their respective events will play in the grand final. And the winner of the grand final will earn berth in the Turkish Airlines Open Pro-Am event.

“This is an important moment for us as we have been able to bring in the tournament to Nepal,” said Abdullah Tuncer Kececi, General Manager of Turkish Airlines in Kathmandu. “We are happy to organise the tournament in Kathmandu as it is also important from tourism perspective. We are trying to develop Nepal as tourism destination and this event will help us in making it a golf destination,” Kececi added.

Member of Gokarna Golf Club Bhairaja Pandey thanked Turkish Airlines for organising the event in Nepal. “The efforts of Turkish Airlines and GM Kececi to include Nepal in the tournament are laudable. It shows that Nepal has lots of other things to sell apart from mountains,” Pandey added.

Acharya opined that the event had put Nepal in world golfing map. “As the tournament is played across the globe, the inclusion of Nepal in the series has put Nepal in world golfing map,” he said. Acharya said the tournament will be played under stableford 3/4 handicap format and the nett section winner will qualify for the final. “As in other events, we will have different categories and prizes as well. “We will have 10 golfers from RNGC and two each from Dharan and Pokhara for the event,” he added.

RNGC is organising the qualifying event on Saturday and top 10 scorers will earn berths in the Nepal leg of the tournament in Gokarna.
