Maharashtra authorities plan to tighten COVID-19 lockdown measures; Pune reimposes some lockdown protocols

KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 21

The Maharashtrian authorities are mulling over decreeing a half-day curfew from 5 pm to 5 am in regions experiencing a spike in freshly reported COVID-19 cases.

The Chief Minister of Maharashrashtra Uddhav Thackrey is said to have called for an emergency meeting of the concerned authorities to analyse the situation and decide on further proceedings with talks of the potential curfew in place.

Similarly, it has been learnt that those wedding-halls violating COVID-19 protocols in place could be charged as much as INR 1 lakh.

In the same manner, vegetable-markets too could be regulated and made to open for decided schedules only --10 am to 5 pm.

If fresh cases swell up, the government needs to impose stricter measures like a night curfew, Maharashtra relief and rehabilitation minister Vijay Wadettiwar was quoted as saying in the Indian media.

The state of Maharashtra has recorded as many as 6,281 cases of the highly contagious respiratory infection on Saturday.

Divisional commissioner of Pune, Saurabh Rao confirmed to the media that some of the provided relaxations are being re-imposed in light of increasing cases of the COVID-19 infection including closures of schools, colleges and private coaching until the end of February.

Furthermore, the mobility of people will also be prohibited between 11 pm to 6 am only allowing for the operation of essential activities like milk supply and medical services.
