Thapa Magar, Shahi win

The 13th South Asian Games gold medal winning boxers Bhupendra Thapa Magar and Sanil Shahi finished first in the selection tournament here at the International Sports Complex on Tuesday.

The Nepal Police Club boxer Thapa Magar beat Pawan Gurung of Pokhara in the men's 64kg weight category, while Lalitpur's Shahi defeated Tribhuvan Army Club's Ravi Sunar in the 69kg section final. TAC boxers Sushil Thapa Magar (49kg), Prem Chaudhary (53kg) and Ashish Duwadi (above-91kg), also bagged gold medals in their respective weight categories along with Nepal APF Club's Puran Rai (56kg) and Boxmandu's Ganesh Thapa (60kg).

In women's section, the 13th SA Games gold medallist Minu Gurung won women's 51-54kg weight category along with her TAC teammates Lalita Maharjan (46-48kg), Chandra Kala Thapa (54-57kg) and Punam Rawal (60-64kg). Likewise, APF boxers Mala Rai (48-51kg), Sangita Sunar (57-60kg) and Saraswoti Rana Magar (69kg) bagged gold medals in their respective weight categories.

A total of 50 boxers took part in the tournament which served as selection for the ASBC Elite Boxing Tournament slated for May 21-31 in New Delhi, India. Nepal Boxing Association President Ram Awale informed that the NBA would pick players for the India tour as per the boxers' performance in the selection tournament.
