US Nepal Climbers Association Inc has announced that the New York State has officially recognised May 29 as official Everest Day.

Issuing a statement on May 29, the Association shared that New York State Assemblywoman Jeniffer Rajkumar has vowed to introduce Mount Everest Day on the floor of the NY State Assembly next year.

On the occasion of Everest Day, an event was held yesterday in coordination with the United Sherpa Association Inc (USA) and the US Nepal Climbers Association Inc (USNCA), in Rigzin Chhokorling Hall of the Sherpa Kyidug.

Participants lit butter lamps in the memory of those who passed away climbing Mt Everest and those that have suffered due to Covid-19.

President of the United Sherpa Association Inc, Tshering Sherpa shared that May 29 is internationally recognized as Everest Day and cannot be replaced with or overlapped by any other day

On May 29, 1953, Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary became the first people to climb Mt Everest. Hence, this day honours Everest mountain climbers around the world and celebrates the feats they have achieved since 1953.
