Six Maoists hurt in clash with cops

TAPLEJUNG: At least six cadres of UCPN-Maoist were injured when they clashed with police here in the district headquarters of Taplejung today. Over a dozen of them were also arrested. The clashes ensued when the police tried to forcefully reopen the government offices that were told to shut by the Maoists for one week. The police move comes after an all-party meeting held on Sunday had decided to reopen the offices. The District Development Committee, Nepal Bank Limited, District Administration Office and Land Revenue Office were those supposed to be open from today. No sooner had the police reopened the offices, the Maoists showed up at the scene and attempted to shut them again which prompted the clash. The irked Maoist cadres also vandalised District Land Revenue Office and damaged some important documents. During the vandalism, the Maoists also manhandled an employee. The police, after situation gradually slid out of control, had rained batons on the Maoists to disperse them. Tension rain high in Taplejung Bazaar due to the clashes. The arrested Maoists include Khil Prasad Budhachhetri 'Parag', Mari Subba, Ram Neyang, Krishna Shankar, among others. In the wake of the incident, the Maoists here issued a press release and condemned the police intervention. The Maoists' Limbuwan state committee member and Taplejung district secretary Rajesh Poudel also warned of strong protests if his arrested comrades were not released soon. The Maoists, demanding to give "martyr status" to their three activists killed here after the peace process, compensation to their families and action against the culprits, have been in phase-wise agitation, including shut down of the government offices, transportation strike, among others, from the last one week.
