Kathayat, Budha win titles

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 6

Prakash Kathayat and Ram Maya Budha of Jumla won the 3,000, gold medals in the Youth Athletics Championship here at the Dasharath Stadium today.

Kathayat completed the distance in nine minutes and 22.5 seconds to finish first in U-20 boys' section race ahead of Kapilvastu's Ajay Pandey and Lalitpur's Mahesh Sijali. Budha came first in 10:44.5, while her Jumla teammate Bamjana Budha and Surkhet's Bimala Karki finished second and third respectively.

Sujit Tharu of Kapilvastu won gold medal in the U-16 boys' long jump with a distance of 6.68 metres. Kapilvastu Ramji Bishwokarma came second and Chitwan's Sudip Mahato was third.

Karuna Rijal of Dang came first in girls' section with 4.26m, finishing ahead of Sushila Chaudhary of Dang and Dhanu Rai of Nuwakot.

In U-20 boys'long jump, Ram Lakhan Tharu of Bardiya won gold medal with the distance of 6:33m, while Nawalparasi's Salin Dewang and Bardiya's Roshan Tharu came second and third respectively. Soniya Aftar of Bangladesh claimed the girls' section gold medal with the jump of 5.77m, while Sima Chaudhary of Dang and Rabina Tharu of Bardiya bagged silver and bronze respectively.

Earlier, Minister for Youth and Sports Maheshwor Jung Gahatraj inaugurated the two-day championship organised by Athletics Family of Nepal.
