DHARAN, JANUARY 26

CPN-Unified Socialist's Jayanti Rai and CPN-UML's Sonam Gyaljen Sherpa were elected members of the National Assembly under women and minority categories, respectively, from Province 1 on Wednesday.

Nepali Congress' Gopal Basnet was elected NA member under open category through lottery.

Jayanti Rai secured 52 votes of the Province Assembly and 122 votes from people's representatives of rural municipalities and municipalities.

Rai's rival Sumitra Bhandari garnered 38 votes of province lawmakers and 141 heads and deputy heads of the local levels. UML's Sherpa bagged 4,752 votes under minority category.

The coalition's candidate Hemraj Rai won 4,368 votes. Coalition candidate Gopal Basnet was declared winner through lottery. Both Basnet and UML candidate Guru Baral received equal 4,488 votes.
