KATHMANDU, JANUARY 26

The five-party ruling alliance led by the Nepali Congress has won 18 out of 19 National Assembly seats.

Sonam Gyalzen Sherpa is the only candidate from the main opposition CPN-UML who won the election representing his party. Sherpa (differently-abled) secured 4,770 votes to win the election from Province 1.

CPN (Unified Socialist) candidate Jayanti Rai won the seat reserved for women in Province 1.

She secured 4,692 votes, according to a press release issued by Election Commission.

Gopal Kumar Basnet who contested the NA seat (others) from Province 1 secured 4,489 votes to win the election.

Basnet had a tie with CPN-UML as they both had secured 4,489 votes, but Basnet won in the draw of lots.

CPN-Maoist Centre candidate Urmila Aryal (woman) and Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal candidate Mohmmed Khalid (others) won the election from Madhes province. Aryal and Khalid secured 6,156 votes 6,678 votes, respectively.

CPN (Unified Socialist) candidate Goma Devi Timilsina (woman) and NC candidate Krishna Prasad Poudel (others) secured 4,824 and 4,794 votes, respectively, to win the election from Bagmati Province.

NC candidate Kamala Panta (woman), CPN-MC candidate Bhuvan Bahadur Sunar (Dalit), and CPN-MC candidate Suresh Ale Magar (others) won the election from Gandaki Province.

Panta, Sunar, and Ale Magar secured 3,084, 3,048, and 3,096 votes, respectively.

CPN (Unified Socialist) candidate Rajendra Laxmi Gaire (woman), Rastriya Janamorcha candidate Tul Prasad Bishwakarma, and NC candidate Yubaraj Sharma won election from Lumbini Province. Gaire, Bishwakarma, and Sharma won 4,374, 4,356, and 4,344 votes, respectively.

Nepali Congress candidate Durga Gurung (woman), CPN- MC candidate Nara Bahadur Bista (differently-abled), and CPN (Unified Socialist) candidate Uday Bahadur Bohara (others) won the election from Karnali Province.

Gurung, Bista, and Bohara won 2,979, 3,006, and 3,006 votes, respectively.

CPN-MC candidate Madan Kumari Shah (woman), CPN (Unified Socialist) candidate Jagat Bahadur Parki (Dalit), and NC candidate Narayan Datta Mishra (others) won from Sudurpaschim Province.

Shah, Parki, and Mishra bagged 3,834, 3,762, and 3,744 votes, respectively.

There were 43 candidates in the race. A provincial assembly member's vote has a weightage of 48, whereas a vote of a chief/ deputy chief of local levels has a weightage of 18.

The National Assembly has 59 members, of which three are nominated by the president on the government's recommendation.

Each province has a quota of eight members.
