Local election update: Balen and Sunita maintain healthy lead in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU, MAY 22
Independent candiate Balen Shah has been leading the mayoral race of Kathmandu since the first day of the counting of votes of the recently concluded local level election.
According to Election Commission Nepal (ECN), Balen has scored 41,279 votes to NC Shrijana Shrestha's 23, 855 votes. However, Keshav Stiphit who was chasing Balen has been trailing Shrestha by 831 votes in third position.
CPN-UML deputy mayoral candidate Sunita Dangol is also maintaining a healthy lead at the top with 42, 428 votes to CPN (Unified) candidate Rameshwor Shrestha's 14, 242 votes while a Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) candidate Binita Magaiya is in third position with 8,661 votes.
Likewise, independent candidates Harka Sampang and Gopal Hamal have secured victories in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan and Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolis. NC candidate Khel Raj Pandey was elected as mayor of Butwal Sub-Metropolitan city and CPN-UML Sabitri Devi Aryal as his deputy.
As of today, Nepal Congress has mustered 314 victories in mayor/chairman and 290 deputy positions across the nation.
Meanwhile, CPN-UML which had forged alliance with Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has secured 193 victories in mayor/chairman positions and 220 deputy positions.
CPN-Maoist is trailing in third position with 120 and 128 victories in mayor/chairman and deputy positions respectively.
