KATHMANDU, MAY 24

Nepali Congress, which had forged alliance with other four parties in the recently concluded local election, is leading vote count after securing 322 mayoral positions and 279 deputy positions nation wide.

According to the Election Commission Nepal (ECN), CPN-UML is trailing behind NC with 203 and 233 victories in mayor and deputy mayor positions, respectively.

Meanwhile, independent mayoral candidate Balen Shah is in a strong position to claim the post in Kathmandu. As of today, Shah has secured 51, 163 votes to NC candidate Srijana Shrestha's 32, 059 votes.

Former mayor and CPN-UML candidate Keshav Sthapit is trailing down the pecking order in third position with 31, 166 votes.

However, CPN-UML candidate Sunita Dangol contesting for deputy mayor post is leading the vote count with 52, 809 votes to CPN (Unified) Socialist candidate Rameshwor Shrestha's 17, 884 votes.

Renu Dahal, daughter of CPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has been elected to the mayoral post of Bharatpur Metropolis for a second term and Chirtrasen Adhikari was elected as her deputy.

Dahal was re-elected to the helm after edging her closest competitor Bijaya Subedi of CPN-UML by a massive margin of 12, 449 votes.
