Discussion on assessing journalists' safety in South Asia begins tomorrow

KATHMANDU, MAY 29

To mark the 10th anniversary of UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists, UNESCO's Delhi and Kathmandu offices, in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission, Nepal, will organise a two-day consultation in Kathmandu on May 31 and June 1 featuring high level discussions to assess the safety of journalists in the South Asian region.

Outcomes of this consultation will inform a ministerial conference to be held in Vienna this November convened by the Austrian minister of foreign affairs in collaboration with UNESCO and the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights to mark International Day to End Impunity (November 2).

Michael Croft, UNESCO Representative to Nepal and the Head of Office, will deliver the opening remarks at the discussion.

Participants in the discussion include senior Indian journalist Jatin Gandhi, Executive Director of Journalists' Association of Bhutan Namgay Zam, Maldives Journalists Association General Secretary Naaif Ahmed, and Sri Lanka Press Institute CEO Kumar Lopez.
