Experts of the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology carried out a study of the Sisdole dumping site in a bid to develop permanent waste management solution as per the direction of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah.

Mayor Shah shared the following message: 'A team of experts from the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology has studied Sisdole. Dr Ravindra Dhakal, Dr Tista Prasain Josi, Dr Saurabh Bhattarai, Anita Panthi and Sunita Shrestha conducted the study on the contamination of leachate.

The study was carried out by collecting water samples from three different points at a distance of 920 metres from the place where the leachate was mixed.'

A comparative study of three samples collected from Sisdole showed that large amount of leachate was mixed with water. The amount of water pollution is also high up to 1 km away from the source.

Preliminary studies have shown that this has had a negative impact on aquatic lives in the area. Experts say the situation needs to be brought under control as soon as possible.

The full report of water and leachate will be known in the next few days and the team of NAST will also suggest the method of waste management after receiving the full report. Immediate, medium and long term solutions will be discussed and practised in coordination with NAST and other experts.

Today, a team led by Amrita Poudel observed Sisdole and determined the amount of insecticides needed to make Sisdole odourless and the method of sowing insecticides.

'Preparations are being made to start preliminary work within three days,' she said.
