BAJURA, OCTOBER 20

The connection between Swamikartik Khapar and Jagannath rural municipalities in Bajura was broken after the suspension bridge over the Karnali River linking the two local levels was swept away by flood.

According to Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality Chairperson Bharat Bahadur Rokaya, the sweeping away of the bridge at Bhaisagad has cut off some 1,000 households of Sappata from the nearby Berma Bazaar of Jagannath Rural Municipality.

'While the destruction of the bridge has made movement difficult, it is also likely to cause food crisis,' said local teacher Dhana Bahadur Dhami.

'Now that the bridge has been swept away, reaching Berma bazaar will take over three hours,' Rokaya said.

'Though we're doing all we can, it's likely to be difficult to build a suspension bridge at this moment,' he said, adding that mostly patients had been affected following the same.

The destruction of the bridge has affected wards 1 and 2 of Swamikartik Khapar and wards 3, 4 and 5 of Jagannath rural municipalities.

Locals have long been complaining about the lack of action on the part of the authorities concerned after many bridges were earlier identified as being at risk of floods.

Meanwhile, incessant rainfall is also said to have swept away over a dozen suspension bridges over the Karnali River in other districts, including Humla, Mugu, Kalikot, Achham, and Dailekh.
