Experts discuss contemporary issues, challenges in agriculture sector

KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 11

Agriculture Campaign for Food in cooperation of Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development organised one-day event 'Integrated Agriculture and Food System: Contemporary Issues', in Hetauda, on Thursday.

Addressing the programme, agricultural expert Krishna Paudel warned of looming catastrophe due to human activities and urged all concerned stakeholders to overhaul the overall farming system.

Prahlad Lamichhane, a member of the Provincial Policy and Planning Commission, said that agriculture sector and farmers were being neglected.

Likewise, Yuvraj Pandey, head of Agricultural Knowledge Centre Chitwan, said that even the officials of the agricultural sector have not been able to attract their children and the new generation to the sector.

Professor Kalyani Mishra of the Agriculture and Forestry University said that boosting the morale of the farmers was imperative for improving the condition of agriculture sector.

State Government State Policy and Planning Commission Vice-President Krishna Raj Pant said that the government also feels that the farmers and the agricultural sector have been neglected and that there is a need to overhaul the existing policies and regulations to uplift the agricultural sector. 'Thus, we are facilitating the government to create farmer-friendly policies and programmes.'

A number of presentations were made during the programme, among which Spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development Jhalak Nath Kandel made a presentation on the state of agricultural development in Bagmati Province.

More than 70 people from various concerned bodies were present in the programme.
