New Diamond, APF record wins in women's volleyball tourney

Hongwanji New Diamond Youth Sports Club and Nepal APF Club registered victories on the opening day of the sixth KNP Nerolac National Women's Volleyball Tournament here at the NSC covered hall today.

New Diamond outplayed Tribhuvan Army Club in straight sets in the inaugural match. New Diamond won the match 25-20, 25-14, 25-10 against the depleted TAC, who missed the services of key players Shanti Tharu and Sunita Khadka.

Rima Kunwar of New Diamond was named the player of the match and she received trophy and Rs 10,000 from KNP Nerolac Country Head Manoj Mishra and Nepal Volleyball Association President Jitendra Bahadur Chand.

In another match, defending champions APF defeated departmental rivals Nepal Police Club in straight sets.

APF took the first set 25-20 and won the next two sets with identical scores of 25-21 to complete the victory and earn three points. APF's Saraswati Chaudhary was named the player of the match and she earned Rs 10,000.

A total of four teams are taking part in the tournament organised by Sher Bahadur Khadka Memorial Foundation under the sponsorship of KNP Nerolac paints. Earlier, National Sports Council Member Secretary Tanka Lal Ghising inaugurated the tournament. The winners of the eight-day tournament will receive Rs 300,000, while the runners-up and third place teams will earn Rs 150,000 and Rs 75,000 respectively.

The best player of the tournament will get Rs 50,000, while the best server, defender, setter, libero, spiker and coach will receive Rs 15,000 each. The emerging player will receive Rs 15,000, while player of the match will get Rs 10,000.

Meanwhile, the Sher Bahadur Khadka Memorial Foundation felicitated women's national team member Salina Shrestha with the Special Award during the opening ceremony of the tournament.

NSC Member Secretary Ghising, NVA President Chand, KNP Nerolac Country Head Mishra and Foundation Patron Gamali Khadka honoured the New Diamond player with appreciation letter and Rs 50,000.

Shrestha is the member of the national team that won two gold medals in the AVC Asian Senior Women's Central Zone Volleyball Tournament and silver medal in the 13th South Asian Games.
