On being obedient

Obedience means being compliant with an order, request or law. A person who is obedient is considered good, while one who is disobedient is punished. From a very young age, children are taught to be obedient. Even if an experienced person comes and speaks gibberish, the child has to be obedient with them. If the child shows disinterest and does not like what the person says, the child would not be considered well-behaved by the parents, the experienced person and the society as a whole.

Even today, parents set many restrictions when girls are going through their menstrual cycle because they think this biological process is impure, and God would definitely get angry if the restrictions are not followed. In some are as, menstruating girls are not even allowed to live in their homes and have to live in poorly ventilated huts.

When the girls show impatience and raise their voice in disobedience, their parents tell them to follow what they say because, when their parents were going through the same circumstances, they used to follow the same traditions, and they used to obey their parents without showing any hesitation.

The same thing happens in education. When we are young, the good children are those who say 'yes' and 'no' according to the demand of the circumstance.

If one does some kind of query, they are usually neglected or considered a disobedient, rebellious child.

This has led to a decrease in the critical thinking of children as they are not taught to think more often or have their own opinions. They are taught that it is more important to agree with the teacher than to be right and original.

When I was in school, I had a science teacher who was against new scientific discoveries because, according to him, it was a waste of time and money.

He believed that all the information could be found in the religious scriptures.

He was so sure about it even without reading any scriptures and coming to the conclusion by listening to some fancy gurus.

I believe that children should be guided into becoming more curious than being obedient from their childhood. If children are curious, their minds will be more active, which would make them more observant of the reality. Curiosity led Galileo to drop weights from the Leaning Tower of Pisa to show that objects fall with the same acceleration rather than only reading the pages from Aristotle.

If girls were to be more curious than obedient, they would have raised questions about the menstrual cycle rather than seeing it as something impure and would have known that it was biological and completely natural. Therefore, it is better to guide children to be curious than obedient so that they can create their own world.
