KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 24
The Ministry of Health and Population has announced an increase in the monetary incentive for families of posthumous organ donors, raising the amount to NPR 200,000 per family.
Previously, families received NPR 100,000 through the Bhaktapur-based Human Organ Transplant Centre. On Sunday, Home Minister Pradip Paudel approved the decision to double the incentive.
Additionally, hospitals facilitating organ donations will now receive NPR 75,000 per case, an increase from the earlier NPR 50,000. According to the Ministry, the Finance Ministry approved this increment through internal resource reallocation.
The Human Organ Transplant Centre reports handling approximately 1,000 kidney transplant requests and 55 liver transplant requests annually. Of these, the center performs around 200 kidney transplants and 20 liver transplants each year, contributing to nearly 70% of the country's total organ transplants.
Posthumous organ donation is legally permitted in Nepal. Besides the Human Organ Transplant Centre, facilities like Bir Hospital, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Maharajgunj, and several private hospitals also provide organ transplant services.
