Funeral service of Capt Ram Bahadur Limbu VC MVO performed in Damak

The final funeral service of Captain Ram Bahadur Limbu VC MVO was performed today, 30 April 2023, in the late VC's hometown Damak, Jhapa.

British Gurkha personnel from British Gurkhas Nepal (BGN) and Gurkha units formally handed over Captain Limbu's body to his family after paying respects amidst a ceremony.

Lieutenant General (Retired) Peter Pearson CB CBE, who served in the British Army as a Gurkha officer for 35 years, attended the event representing His Majesty King Charles III.

Colonel Paul Smith, Commander BGN, Director Gurkha Welfare Trust (Nepal) and Defence Attache' read the honour to late Captain Limbu VC MVO, according to the BGN.

Major General Ash Bahadur Tamang, Commander Eastern Division of the Nepali Army; Mr Mark Walters, First Political Secretary, British Embassy; Lieutenant Colonel Rajeshkumar Gurung, Deputy Commander BGN; Major Ranjankumar Badgami, Gurkha Major BGN; office bearers and members of various British Gurkha veteran associations; BGN personnel; family members; relatives and people of the local community were among those who paid their final respects.

Captain (Retired) Ram Bahadur Limbu, the only living British Gurkha recipient of The Victoria Cross (VC) – one of the highest and most prestigious awards of the British honours system, passed away at 03:45 a.m. on 22 April 2023. Limbu, 83, was undergoing treatment at Nepal Mediciti Hospital in Kathmandu when he breathed his last. Limbu is a recipient of also the The Royal Victorian Order – Member (MVO), the Order conferred for extraordinary, important or personal services to the British Sovereign.

A military funeral of late Captain Limbu was held at British Gurkhas Nepal on 28 April 2023 before his body was brought to Damak.
