BAJURA, JUNE 15

Six children of Tribeni Municipality in Bajura, who were stranded following the death of their mother, have been rescued.

Asmita Devi Damai, 32, of Chhatara, Tribeni Municipality, died due to post-delivery excessive bleeding at Seti Provincial Hospital, leaving her six children including the 21-day-old infant in a lurch.

According to Tribeni Municipality Deputy Mayor Kamala Neupane, Kathmandu-based Shanti Service Home rescued the children following the publication of a news report on those children.

'After we learnt about the plight of the children from the newspaper, we decided to rescue the children on the condition that our care home would take care of the upbringing and education of the kids,' said the service home's programme coordinator Bijendra Kunwar, adding that the rescue was conducted in coordination with the local municipality concerned.

Earlier, this daily had carried a news report about the plight of the children, including the 21-day infant after their mother had died.

Though the kids have their father, he too is unwell. What's even worse is that the poverty-stricken family is finding it difficult to keep the infant alive for want of money to even buy milk.

Besides the one-month-old infant, five other children, including her sister aged one-and-a-half years, weren't faring well either.

While all of them except the eldest daughter Shushila, 12, are suffering from malnutrition, none of them go to school. Shushila's three other siblings are aged 9, 7, and 6.

Asmita's kin had taken her to Bayalpata Hospital of Achham after she suffered from excessive bleeding one week after delivering her sixth child.

She was then taken to Seti Provincial Hospital upon the referral of Bayalpata Hospital. Later, she died at the hospital in the course of treatment.
