A pickup truck allegedly being used to escort a car carrying 162.794 kg of marijuana was intercepted in Makawanpur, leading to the arrest of two people, police said.
A patrol team from the Area Police Office, Manahari stopped the two vehicles at around 2:45 am on Monday after receiving a tip-off about suspected drug trafficking.
Police said the car (Ba Pra 01-025 Cha 0877) was travelling from Bhavar towards Kharangga when it was being escorted by a pickup (Ga 2 Cha 615) along an inner road in Bhavar, Manahari Rural Municipality-9.
A search of the car found 13 plastic-wrapped packets of marijuana concealed inside its seats, according to DSP Madhav Kafle, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Makawanpur.
The driver of the car, 56-year-old Dev Narayan Mahato of Madi, Chitwan, and the pickup driver, 48-year-old Tek Bahadur Dong of Bharatpur, Chitwan, were arrested after they allegedly tried to flee.
Police said preliminary questioning indicated that the pickup had been used to escort the marijuana smugglers. Both suspects, along with the two vehicles and the seized marijuana, have been taken into custody at the Area Police Office, Manahari, for further investigation.
