Dong clinches Monthly Medal trophy

After 10 medal rounds, top 40 golfers in nett section and top 20 players in gross category will advance to the Club Championship finals which will be played over two rounds in January and February next year

KATHMANDU, JULY 1

Tashi Tshiring Dong won the third edition title of Surya Nepal Gokarna Monthly Medal here at the Gokarna Golf Club today.

Playing with one handicap allowance, Dong carded an impressive six-under 66 to finish first in nett section.

The former national football team member, Dong carded birdies on the third, fourth, ninth, 10th and 12th holes and also sank an eagle on the seventh. He faced a double bogey on the 17th hole.

AIG Hari Bahadur Pal finished second on count back as he edged past Dr Sameer Aryal on count back after they carded four-under 68 each. Pal came up with the score of 33.5 on the back nine, while Aryal played 34 based on their respective handicap allowances.

Tashi Tshiring won the gross section award with the score of four-under 68. Nett section winner, Dong had the best card of the day at five-under 67 but he could not take the gross section award due to the tournament rule of one player, one major prize.

In junior section, Ashray Basnyat carded five-under 67 nett to win the title ahead of his twin brother Sayan Basnyat, who produced a card of three-under 69.

A total of 44 players took part in the tournament sponsored by Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd.

Senior Golf Director of Gokarna Forest Resort, Deepak Acharya handed over the prizes to the winners.

After the third edition, Tashi Tshiring Dong is the leader in both nett and gross sections. He is at the top of the nett category table with 140 points, while Umesh Jung Thapa is second with 115 points. Sumed Bhattarai is third with 100, while Pawan Bista and Sumod Bastakoti are tied for fourth with 70. In gross section, Dong leads the standing with 220 points, while Tashi Tshiring is second with 200.

Wangchen Dhondup is third with 180, followed by Vijay Shrestha Einhaus (70) and Rabindra Tiwari (35).
