Gorkha Boys checkmate Knight Chess

KATHMANDU: Gorkha Boys Club of Rupandehi edged Knight Chess Club of Jhapa 4-3 in tiebreaker to clinch the Majdur Shahid Smriti Cup Football Tournament here at the Dasharath Stadium today. The championship match was decided in a penalty shootout after the regular 90 and 30 minutes of extra time of play ended in a 1-1 stalemate. Gorkha Boys’ custodian Ritesh Thapa was the star of the match making two crucial saves in the tiebreaker. The Nepal Police Club goalkeeper Thapa saved the denied goals to Prabesh Katuwal and Yogesh Gurung while only Dipak Rai, Sunil Subedi and Parbat Pandey converted for their team. Gorkha Boys made a disappointing start in the tiebreaker with Sandeep Rai missing the target but Anjan KC, Surendra Tamang, Roshan Karki and Pradeep Maharjan all scored the next four spot kicks to help their team clinch the trophy. Earlier both the teams, filled with top stars, failed to live up to their names hardly making threatening moves until Pradeep put Gorkha Boys ahead in the 82nd minute. Nabil Three Star Club midfielder Pradeep capitalised a cross from Surendra Tamang. But their lead last only four minutes as Hem Gurung headed home the equaliser following a freekick from Sachindra Dhimal. Apart from the championship trophy Gorkha Boys also earned Rs 200,000 while Knight Chess got Rs 100,000. Losing semi-finalists Pokhara-XI and hosts Majdur Shahid Smriti Club bagged Rs 50,000 apiece. Sandeep Rai of was declared the best player of the tournament and pocketed Rs 25,000.
