KATHMANDU, MAY 5
Gandaki Province Chief Minister Khagaraj Adhikari has secured a vote of confidence from the Gandaki Province Assembly in a meeting held on Sunday.
Speaker Krishna Prasad Dhital announced that Chief Minister Adhikari's proposal, presented at the province assembly meeting, was approved with a majority of votes.
A total of 30 province assembly members supported the proposal put forward by Chief Minister Adhikari, while 27 voted against it. Additionally, two province assembly members chose to remain neutral. Members from the CPN (UML), Maoist Centre, and an independent candidate voted in favor of Adhikari, while lawmakers from the Nepali Congress opposed the proposal.
Nepali Congress province assembly members protested the Speaker's declaration, disputing his basis for considering the voting by 30 members as a majority, citing a Supreme Court (SC) verdict. Earlier, Surendra Raj Pandey, the Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader in Gandaki Province, urged the Speaker to remain impartial and adhere to the constitutional principles.
Similarly, Hari Bahadur Chuman, the parliamentary party leader of CPN (Maoist Centre) in Gandaki, called upon the Speaker to act as a referee, emphasizing the Speaker's responsibility to safeguard the Gandaki Province Assembly from dissolution.
