KATHMANDU, APRIL 17
The Nepali Congress parliamentary party in Gandaki Province has raised objections to the call for an assembly meeting by Province Chief Dilliraj Bhatta. They argue that a case regarding the fate of the current assembly is sub judice in the Supreme Court.
Parliamentary party leader Surendra Raj Pande emphasized in a press statement that the assembly meeting was summoned in disregard of the Supreme Court's interim order, the constitution, and existing laws. He stated, "It is sheer irresponsibility on the part of the Province Chief to convene the assembly meeting for April 19, disregarding the Supreme Court's interim order while the case is pending in court. Such actions amount to contempt of court."
Pande also criticized the appointments made by the Province government during this period.
The Nepali Congress had filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court on April 9 against the appointment of UML leader Khagraj Adhikari as Province Chief Minister, which was done through the Speaker's vote. The NC argued that the appointment was unconstitutional.
In response, the Supreme Court issued an interim order instructing the Gandaki Province government to refrain from proceeding with any activities until the case is resolved.
