Former district judge sentenced to seven years in jail for marital rape

KATHMANDU, JUNE 11

In a landmark verdict, the Kathmandu District Court has sentenced former district judge Bhuwan Giri to seven years in jail on the charge of marital rape. The court has also ordered Giri to provide Rs 300,000 in compensation to the victim.

A bench led by Judge Durga Bhusal delivered the verdict on Tuesday, sentencing Giri to seven years in jail.

Earlier, on May 26, the court had convicted Giri in the rape case. The punishment and compensation for the victim were announced on Tuesday.

Judge Giri was taken into custody following his suspension after a complaint was registered against him while he was serving as a District Judge in the Kapilvastu District Court.
