HoR Session: Lawmakers urge action on pressing issues

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 29

Members of the House of Representatives (HoR) have urged the government to proactively address a range of critical issues, including the mitigation of losses from natural disasters.

During today's lower house session, Sita Kumari Rana expressed concern over fatalities caused by lightning strikes and called for government compensation to bereaved families and prompt medical treatment for the injured.

Manish Jha raised concerns about the prolonged delay in returning a Nepal Airlines aircraft that had been sent abroad for maintenance. Rajendra Bajgain urged the government to implement measures to prevent actions that could threaten religious harmony.

Lawmakers also voiced strong concerns about the skyrocketing prices of commodities, especially with upcoming festivals. They drew attention to several pressing issues, including the plight of 160,000 Dalit landless squatters, the increasing violence against women, delays in development projects, the lack of market access and fair prices for farmers' products, and the need for effective measures to prevent air accidents.

Further, they emphasized the importance of soil conservation, protecting public land from encroachment, improving road and public transport conditions, controlling the spread of cholera, streamlining the supply system, reducing air pollution, and taking drastic steps to curb endemic corruption.

The MPs who expressed their views during the zero hour included Achyut Prasad Mainali, Ammar Bahadur Rayamajhi, Anjali Shrestha, Anisha Nepali, Anita Devi, Arjun Narsingh KC, Asma Kumari Chaudhary, Ishwar Bahadur Rijal, Udaya Shumsher JBR, Urmila Majhi, Ishwari Gharti, Kantika Sejuwal, Kaluram Rai, Ganesh Parajuli, Goma Lal Sapkota, Ganga Karki, Ganga Prasad Yadav, Ganga Ram Chaudhary, Dr. Chanda Karki, Dr. Chandra Kant Bhandari, Chandra Bahadur Bishwakarma, Tshering Domdul Lama (Bhote), Chhiring Lhamu Lama, Jabeda Khatu, and Julie Kumari Mahato.

Additionally, lawmaker Eknath Dhakal called on the government to take the initiative in hosting the SAARC Summit in Nepal to reinvigorate the regional organization, while Kiran Kumar Saha emphasized the need to amend the Constitution to address emerging national issues.
