KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 27

The 43rd Magar Day was celebrated with great fanfare in Palpa district on Thursday.

The indigenous Magar community marked the occasion with traditional festivities, preparing special dishes, performing cultural dances, and engaging in merriment.

A variety of traditional cuisines, including batuk, chukaune, gherkin, sel roti, and chicken and pork dishes, were prepared and enjoyed.

Khagishwor Magar from Kailashnagar, Tansen, expressed her delight in wearing ethnic attire. 'Traditional dress is the identity of the Magar community, and we must not abandon it,' she emphasized, highlighting the importance of cultural preservation.

Similarly, Anisha Ale from Mathagadhi, also dressed in ethnic outfits, echoed the sentiment, stressing the need to safeguard and promote cultural heritage through festive celebrations.

A program held in Palpa featured a pageant, musical performances, and traditional dances. 'The Magar community has celebrated Magar Unity Day with great joy and enthusiasm. Every village and hamlet with a significant Magar population radiated festivity,' said Bishnu Gagamagar from Baganaskali Rural Municipality.

The celebration also included the exchange of greetings among community members.

The United Magar Upliftment Society organized special events on this occasion, coinciding with its 17th anniversary. Cultural programs were held across all 10 local levels of Ramgha Rural Municipality, with local governments declaring a public holiday in observance of Magar Unity Day, leading to the closure of schools and public offices.

The festivities showcased traditional Kaura, Maruni, Jhyaure, and Salaijo dances, performed by community members.

According to the latest census, Magars constitute over 54% of the population in Palpa district. Nationally, the Magar population stands at over 2.3 million, accounting for 6.9% of Nepal's total population, as per the 2021 census.
