Kavrepalanchok district, which has achieved self-sufficiency in milk production, supplies nearly 70 percent of its total output to Kathmandu and other nearby districts, making it a key supplier for the federal capital.
According to the District Livestock Service Office, the district produces around 149.28 million liters of milk annually. Of this, approximately 70 percent-over 100 million liters-is transported to Kathmandu and other districts, while only 30 percent is consumed locally.
Kavrepalanchok currently has 43,107 milch cows and 59,320 milch buffaloes. Among the buffalo population, 34,340 are local breeds and 24,980 are improved breeds.
According to the District Dairy Producers Cooperative Association, more than 70 dairy cooperatives and over 100 individuals are engaged in milk collection across the district. 'Every day, about 500,000 liters of milk are produced in Kavre, and nearly 300,000 liters are sent to market, primarily Kathmandu,' the office said.
Milk production is highest in municipalities such as Panauti, Banepa, Mandandeupur, and Panchkhal.
Commercial milk sales in Kavrepalanchok began in 2009 BS, and the district was officially declared self-sufficient in milk in 2073 BS. Authorities have now begun tracking income from milk sales, indicating the growing importance of the dairy sector to the district's economy and to Kathmandu's daily supply chain.
