Zonta Club Kathmandu has provided emergency relief packages to 250 families affected by the recent floods in Bidur Municipality-7, Tupche, Nuwakot, and displaced families staying in Kathmandu to perform final rites for relatives killed in the disaster.
The organisation distributed 185 relief packages to affected families in Tupche on September 7 after travelling for 18 hours through damaged road networks. It had distributed another 65 packages to displaced families staying at mourning shelters in Kathmandu on September 6.
Local assessments indicate that around 250 households and 400 people were affected in Tupche. The affected community includes 50 women whose husbands have died or remain missing, while three children have lost both parents.
Of the 250 packages, 220 were gender-sensitive household kits containing basic shelter, kitchen, hygiene and personal-care items. Women's kits also included sanitary products. Another 30 packages were prepared specifically for children and included nutritional items such as health bars, noodles and biscuits.
The organisation also provided diapers, protective gloves and surgical masks to the community health unit.
Zonta Club Kathmandu said it was now developing longer-term rehabilitation measures focused on the economic empowerment of women who have lost livelihoods and ensuring educational continuity for children affected by the disaster.
The club said the next phase would focus on helping women regain economic independence and supporting children who have lost parents to return to school and continue their education.
