Cholera detected among 93 persons in Birgunj

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 26

Since its outbreak on Friday, a total of 93 people have tested positive for cholera in Birgunj as of Monday evening. Health officials confirmed that the disease has now spread to the community level, while the source of the outbreak is yet to be identified.

According to Jayamod Thakur, Public Health Officer at the Parsa Health Office, 93 individuals have been diagnosed with cholera in Birgunj as of last night. The infected patients are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals, though the primary source of infection remains unknown.

Bacterial tests have been conducted at several hospitals. Narayani Hospital and Tarai Hospital have each reported 32 cases, followed by 12 at National Medical College, three each at Bhawani Hospital, Birgunj Health Care, and Mangalam Pathology, and two at Ali Artho Hospital.

In total, 344 patients suffering from cholera or exhibiting similar symptoms have sought treatment at hospitals in Birgunj so far.

Among them, 27 are currently admitted to intensive care units (ICUs), six are being treated with support from high-dependency care units (HDCUs), and 122 patients are in general wards.
