KATHMANDU, AUGUST 31

On the occasion of the 18th National Library Day, Room to Read Nepal inaugurated 48 school libraries across three rural municipalities of Kapilvastu District. Among these, 33 libraries are fully operational, while 15 require additional seating arrangements before becoming fully functional.

The inauguration supports the nationwide theme announced by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology: 'Our Library: Our Future', emphasizing the pivotal role of libraries in promoting quality education and literacy in Nepal.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung said, 'The state has a responsibility to redefine libraries not merely as spaces for storing books but as centers for the overall development of society.'

Education Secretary Choodamani Paudel added that cultivating reading habits is essential for expanding knowledge and encouraged everyone to dedicate time to reading.

The libraries aim to create child-friendly learning spaces and provide access to diverse books and resources, benefiting thousands of students, particularly in low-income communities. Prakash Gaire, Ward Chairperson of Ward No. 3, Kapilvastu Municipality, shared, 'We are excited to have quality reading materials and a child-friendly space for students to enjoy reading and deepen their love for books.'

Pushkar Lal Shrestha, Country Director of Room to Read Nepal, emphasized, 'Libraries are more than just spaces to access books-they are foundations for curiosity, creativity, and opportunity. By collaborating with governments, schools, and communities, we ensure every child has the chance to learn, read, and thrive.'

Since its establishment in Nepal in 2000, Room to Read has set up 4,966 school libraries across 31 districts, distributed over 10.4 million quality reading materials, and fostered learning environments that empower children through reading.

Room to Read, founded on the belief that 'World Change Starts with Educated Children®,' works globally to develop foundational literacy skills and life skills that promote gender equality. The organization has benefited over 50 million children across 28 countries.
