KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 8
At least eight Gen Z protesters have died during escalating demonstrations against corruption and the government's social media ban in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu, on Monday.
Preliminary reports indicate that five of the deceased succumbed to injuries at Trauma Center, two in Civil Hospital, and and one in Kathmandu Medical College, Sina Mangal. The identities of some victims are yet to be confirmed.
Hundreds of protesters, journalists, and security personnel have also been injured and are receiving treatment at various hospitals across the capital. Some patients are reported to be in serious condition.
The demonstrations, initially announced as peaceful, turned confrontational after protesters stormed the Federal Parliament premises and clashed with police. Authorities responded with tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and aerial firing, but tensions escalated further.
Following the clashes, the Kathmandu District Administration Office imposed a curfew in key areas, including Baneshwor, Singhadurbar, Narayanhiti, and surrounding sensitive government zones. The curfew aims to restrict movement, gatherings, and further unrest while security forces work to restore order.
