BIRGUNJ, SEPTEMBER 23

Over a month after the first case appeared, health authorities have yet to identify the source of the cholera outbreak in Birgunj Metropolitan City, where the infection remains uncontrolled.

According to the Parsa District Health Office, 28 new cholera cases were confirmed between Sunday evening and Monday evening, bringing the total to 240 by Asoj 6. Of these, 236 patients have been discharged after treatment, while four remain hospitalized.

Since the start of the outbreak, 1,512 people with cholera or diarrheal symptoms have been admitted to 21 hospitals in and around the city. Of them, 1,479 have recovered, while four are in intensive care, one in a high-dependency unit, and 28 are in general wards.

Public Health Officer Jaymod Thakur said containment is difficult without public cooperation. 'We have urged residents to boil or chlorinate water, but many ignore the advice,' he said. Starting Tuesday, health workers and volunteers will visit affected wards to teach households how to disinfect drinking water.
