UPDATE: Landslide in Ilam claims 34 lives, four missing

At least 34 people have died and four are missing following a massive landslide triggered by continuous rainfall in various municipalities of Ilam district, officials confirmed on Sunday afternoon.

Chief District Officer Sunita Nepal stated that postmortem examinations have been completed for 11 of the deceased. The District Administration Office said detailed assessments of the damage are ongoing.

According to the authorities, the casualties occurred as follows: five in Manebhanjyang-1, Suryodaya Municipality; six in Ghosa-6, Ilam Municipality; four in Sandakpur Rural Municipality; three in Mangsebung Rural Municipality; eight in Deumai Municipality; seven in Maijogmai Rural Municipality; and one in Phakphokthum Rural Municipality.

In addition to the fatalities, two people remain missing in Sandakpur Rural Municipality, while one person each is missing in Ilam Municipality and Maijogmai Rural Municipality.
