KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 21
Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has extended her best wishes on the occasion of the Tihar festival, expressing hope that the light of Diwali will inspire everyone to walk the path of truth, justice, virtue, and humanity.
In her message of best wishes for Tihar 2082, Bhandari conveyed happiness, peace, prosperity, and continued progress to all Nepalis living both at home and abroad on the auspicious occasion of the festival.
'At a time when the country is facing extremely challenging circumstances, I believe that festivals like Tihar can help strengthen the spirit of mutual harmony, tolerance, and unity among Nepalis,' the former President said. She further expressed hope that this radiant festival would inspire everyone to resolve differences and animosities through peaceful dialogue, cooperation, and public consensus.
Bhandari highlighted that the Deusi-Bhailo cultural performances, an integral part of Tihar, represent a purely indigenous Nepali tradition that conveys the message of unity and fraternity in society.
Her message further noted that the festival of Tihar includes the worship of animals closely connected to human life-such as crows, dogs, cows, and oxen-as well as the veneration of Goddess Laxmi, the symbol of wealth and prosperity. It also marks the Govardhan festival, symbolizing respect for natural resources, and culminates in Bhaitika, a tradition celebrating the sacred bond between brothers and sisters, accompanied by Deusi-Bhailo singing, dancing, and joyous celebrations.
'By celebrating Tihar in this manner, our original cultural traditions not only highlight the interdependent relationship between nature, human life, and the animal world but also deepen the bond of love between sisters and brothers,' Bhandari stated in her message.
