Landslides, floods cause Rs 11.81 billion in damages in Ilam

KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 4

Property worth over Rs 11.81 billion was destroyed in landslides and floods triggered by continuous rainfall on October 4 and 5 in Ilam district, according to the District Administration Office (DAO).

Chief District Officer Sunita Nepal said the disaster damaged roads, bridges, irrigation systems, drinking water projects, agriculture, livestock, and power infrastructure.

Preliminary assessments from 11 sectoral offices show that road projects suffered the highest losses (Rs 6.96 billion). Infrastructure projects lost Rs 2.34 billion, bridges Rs 850 million, and buildings Rs 40 million.

The Nepal Electricity Authority reported losses of Rs 24.7 million, while the Water Resources and Irrigation Division faced damages exceeding Rs 328 million. Damages to livestock and veterinary projects reached Rs 40 million.

Under the Water Supply and Sewerage Management Department, 29 projects were damaged, causing losses of Rs 287.5 million, while another 223 projects under Water Supply and Sanitation Division, Bhadrapur, faced damages worth Rs 280.1 million.

Floods and landslides also destroyed crops on 892 hectares, affecting 3,409 farmers and causing agricultural losses worth Rs 274.9 million. Additionally, 25 tea estates under the National Tea and Coffee Development Board reported damages of Rs 47.55 million.

The disaster claimed 39 lives, left 26 injured, and one person missing, displacing 711 households, of which 11 families remain in temporary shelters.

A detailed report has been submitted to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority and the Ministry of Home Affairs, CDO Nepal said.
