More than 8,600 people have been rescued from the devastating Bhotekoshi flood in Rasuwa, as security agencies continue searching for 4,898 people still unaccounted for.
According to the latest figures released by Nepal Police Headquarters, 8,631 people have so far been rescued, while 3,655 are currently staying at a holding centre.
The flood, which struck the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa on August 26, has claimed a heavy toll. Police said 1,344 bodies have been recovered, of which 1,300 have been buried. Efforts are continuing to identify and manage the remaining bodies.
Police spokesperson DIG Abi Narayan Kafle said the recovered victims include 52 children, 33 girls, 269 women and 489 men, while 501 bodies remain unidentified.
Of those still unaccounted for, 2,448 are locals. Police said 1,350 people have been contacted by phone, while the figures also include foreign nationals-274 men and 344 women.
Authorities are continuing search and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas, while DNA profiling has become a key part of efforts to establish the identities of missing and deceased people.
Police have collected DNA samples from 1,260 deceased people and 972 relatives so far, stressing that the process is crucial for matching unidentified bodies with missing persons.
Security agencies, including Nepal Police and other government bodies, remain engaged in search, rescue and the management and identification of victims.
