KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 28 Bangladesh has agreed to purchase an additional 20 megawatts of electricity from Nepal, building on existing power trade arrangements as the two nations strengthen energy sector cooperation. The seventh meeting of the Energy Secretary Level Nepal-Bangladesh Joint Steering Committee on Energy, held in Dhaka on Thursday, approved the expansion following technical discussions. Nepal currently exports 40 megawatts to Bangladesh and will proceed with necessary preparations to facilitate the additional supply. Energy Secretary Chiranjibi Chataut represented Nepal while Bangladesh's Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Secretary Farzana Mamtaz participated on the Bangladesh side. The committee discussed recommendations from a joint action committee meeting held on November 26. Both nations committed to completing processes for signing a memorandum of understanding on promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency. Bangladesh will provide technical assistance to Nepal in energy testing, electric vehicle charging stations and rooftop solar installations. Capacity building programmes will be advanced between the two countries, strengthening bilateral collaboration in the energy sector. The secretary-level steering committee mechanism continues to focus on expanding energy sector cooperation and exchanging development experiences in power trade.
