KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 1 After much debate, the Nepali Congress's main working committee has reached an agreement on the decision of the regular general convention, which will take place from January 10 to 12. NC Spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, speaking with mediapersons, stated that the Central Committee meeting unanimously decided to hold the general convention on January 10, 11 and 12. During the meeting, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba unanimously presented the general convention agenda in January to the disgruntled leaders of the founding faction. Following the September 8 and 9 Gen Z revolt, the party's general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma vigorously advocated for a regular general convention prior to the House of Representatives election on March 5. They had also gathered signatures for a special general convention because the party's founding faction did not appear to support it. On October 14, a petition signed by approximately 55 per cent of the delegates to the 14th General Convention calling for a special general convention was registered at the central office. The Central Committee meeting, which began on October 14, was repeatedly postponed due to an inability to agree on a date for the general convention. Following that, the party split into two factions over whether to hold a special or regular general convention. Former establishment officials immediately rejected both the proposals, claiming that a general convention was not feasible before Falgun (mid-February to mid-March) elections, with the option of holding it during the upcoming Baisakh (mid-April to mid-May). The Nepali Congress statute stipulates that if at least 40 per cent of the general convention delegates sign and demand a special general convention, a special general convention must be held within three months. Therefore, there was mounting pressure on the Nepali Congress to hold a special general convention by January. However, NC Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka and others were constantly trying to reach an agreement, citing the risk of the party splitting if the special session was held. Upon returning from Singapore after completing his treatment, NC President Deuba called the disgruntled leaders and held several discussions, persuading them to hold a regular general convention in January. In addition, the Nepali Congress has formally decided to allow NC President Deuba to participate in the 15th General Convention. The Nepali Congress, in a central working committee meeting held in Sanepa today, made a formal decision to allow Deuba, the party's caretaker president, to resume his activities. 'The party president/acting president may appoint central representatives as needed in connection with the work related to the 15th General Convention,' the meeting's decision read. The meeting decided to keep NC President Deuba's participation open while presenting a list of new and renewed active memberships to the Central Working Committee meeting. 'The Central President/Acting President shall present and have approved the list of new and renewed active memberships agreed upon by the Active Membership 'Central Investigation Committee' at the Central Working Committee meeting,' the decision states.
