Sudurpaschim Royals' unbeaten run continues; Kathmandu Gorkhas qualify for play-offs

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 4 Sudurpaschim Royals and Kathmandu Gorkhas registered convincing victories in Tuesday's fixtures of the ongoing Siddhartha Bank Nepal Premier League in Kathmandu. In the first match of the day, Kathmandu Gorkhas defeated Pokhara Avengers by 13 runs, while Sudurpaschim Royals outclassed Chitwan Rhinos by 49 runs at a packed TU Cricket Stadium in Kirtipur. Inserted to bat first, the Gorkhas were struggling at 79/5 in 14 overs before Bhim Sharki produced a brilliant counter-attacking innings, smashing a 19-ball half-century studded with five fours and four sixes. Ben Charlesworth held the innings together with a composed 64 off 55 deliveries, hitting five boundaries and two maximums. In reply, Rishi Dhawan and Sri Lankan all-rounder Dhananjaya Lakshan stitched together a 76-run stand for the fifth wicket. With 20 needed off the final over, Karan KC entrusted the ball to Shahab Alam-and he delivered spectacularly, claiming this year's first hat-trick and finishing with stellar figures of 4-0-25-6. Speaking to the media after being named Player of the Match, Bhim Sharki said the wicket was challenging to bat on. 'I took my chances, and it paid off,' he added. 'We obviously play to win, and the bond within our team is getting stronger. We are enjoying our cricket.' In the day's second fixture, Sudurpaschim Royals extended their unbeaten streak with a dominant win over the Rhinos. Put in to bat first, Kris Lynn-dropped by Kushal Malla in the opening over-capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a fluent 75 off 56 balls with five fours and three sixes before retiring hurt. Chasing 170 for victory and a play-offs berth, the Rhinos suffered an early blow when in-form batsman Dawid Malan was brilliantly run out by Dipendra Singh Airee. Wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals as Chitwan eventually folded for 120 in the 17th over. Kris Lynn was later adjudged Player of the Match for his commanding knock. In tomorrow's fixture, Lumbini Lions will take on a resurgent Janakpur Bolts under the lights at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur.
